Part 43: Episode 3, Day 1, Investigation: The Many-Stomached Thief

Looks like we've found our client's trailer and/or dressing room.

Nick!
Sound: Light Bulb

This is where they do all the behind-the-scenes stuff!

Sound: Light Bulb

Are we investigating or touring here?

No one's here this soon after the murder I guess.

Let's take a look around!

Looks like there's no one to talk to here after all, so let's take Maya's suggestion and poke around a bit.

For the first time since the crime scene last episode, we can "Slide" our view to investigate multiple screens. It's still oddly silent for this part of the investigation.

Anyway, let's poke around.

A window into the dressing room.

The glass is frosted, so I can't see inside.

There's a sign by the dressing room door.

Don't you have your own office now Phoenix? You could put your name on the entrance there, too!

The door to the dressing room. It's not locked.

Maybe we can find something as a souvenir...?

What do you mean "find"!?

We don't need a spear!

(And that's the murder weapon for crying out loud!)

As you might expect, this scene unlocks the dressing room as a destination, but we'll finish looking around outside first.

I was aiming for the trash can, but I think we actually got the vending machine.

Let's see... cola, candy, chips, gum...

Huh. It's so... normal.

Sound: Light Bulb

Nick! Try this!

(Ladies first...)

Up until the last couple lines, I still thought they were sifting through the trash and disappointed they didn't find any treasure. Ah well.

That must be the storage room.

That's where they keep all the film equipment.

Umm, what else would they keep in a film studio?

Could be anything, open it up and look around? No?

The remains of yesterday's lunch are scattered around.

Everyone was probably too shocked to clean up.

Good news for us, any evidence left behind maybe hasn't been tampered with yet.

Mmm! T-bone steak! That would have hit the spot.

You just had a burger!

(What!?)

When we were kids my brother used to say he had a special section of his stomach just for apple pie. I'm pretty sure he just didn't want to finish his dinner.

On the other side of the lot, we have a suspicious hole in the wall here.

The metal grate on the drain here has been taken off.

Sound: Light Bulb

Well, if you want to leave that way, be my guest.

Right!

Sound: Whack

Could've fooled me. Think the grate will matter later? Where does the drain lead? Could a small individual or animal have used it to bypass the security cameras?

The grate that used to cover the drain.

Can't have you putting it back on, we'd need a new background!

There's a half-finished backdrop for a stage here.

Looks like a castle.

Probably "Neo Olde Tokyo Castle."

I've got my eye on you, painting. You mysteriously show up somewhere else I'll notice it!

Looks like one of those electric-powered bicycles.

I dunno about these. I mean, what's the point?

Don't people cycle to get exercise!?

Depends on the slope and length of the hill, I guess. And how much exercise you're really looking to get?

Nothing else here, so let's head into our client's dressing room.

(Powers's dressing room...)

(So this is where he was sleeping?)

(Or at least, this is where he claims he was sleeping.)

Right, and there's a picture of him near the crime scene.

(I hope he's telling the truth... for his sake!)

Still silent in here. I triple-checked my settings to make sure I hadn't accidentally left the music turned off or something.

There's some regular suits in among the costumes here.

Those must be his own clothes.

(I'd say you were already wearing one, myself.)

Now, now, we already made the outfit jokes last episode.

It's locked.

Looks like he doesn't open his window much.

I guess it is kind of dusty outside.

Between the window being locked and the couch sitting right under it, it doesn't seem like someone snuck in the window while Will Powers was sleeping. Maybe he left the door unlocked? Or maybe he left his costume somewhere else?

Looks like someone was sleeping here.

Maybe Powers did take a nap here yesterday...

Believe your client, Phoenix!

There's a bunch of snacks on the table. They must give these to the employees.

Some tea and cookies...

You just had a burger!

(How many stomachs does this girl have!?)

I checked, it's the same line here even if you didn't look at the empty lunch plate outside and get the other "extra stomach" line. But so far, Maya has at least three stomachs.

Sound: Light Bulb

Hey, don't open that.

Phoenix we need every clue we can get, respecting the privacy of our client is not real high on the priority list.

Sound: Realization

An employee cardkey. That must be Powers's.

It says "Studio One".

Aha, now we can get into the crime scene!

Borrow it. You mean borrow.

Sound: Select Jingle

We have what we came for, but let's keep being thorough here.

Starting with making sure there isn't more to find in this bag.

I wonder what else is inside Powers's bag...?

Stop that! (My partner, the thief in training.)

They always have mirrors like this in dressing rooms.

I see my hair is still nice and spiky, just how I like it.

I'm glad Phoenix is no longer considering shaving his head and back to liking his spiky hair.

There's a vast array of cosmetics here.

Ooh!

Sound: Objection

Nick! Try this on!

No.

And how can you tell the name of a show just by looking at a wig!?

Sound: Realization

("Kinda"...?)

Phoenix is too busy not reading the law books in his office to understand someone else's passions.

Music: Investigation - Opening

On our way over to Studio One, we stop to show off our new cardkey to the security lady. I'm pretty sure we should be keeping the fact that we have this thing a secret, but I can't help myself. I did totally save first though!

Could you tell me about this, ma'am?

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

The scene of a murder is no place for sightseeing!

I'll be taking that! Hand it over!

Sound: Stab

Look, I don't have a cardkey to the studio, see?

I want to go pay my respects to Jack Hammer where he died.

W... well you'll just have to wait!

Well that was worth it. But what kind of security guard doesn't have full access to the site?

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

Let's show off to the detective, too!

Whazzat?

Sound: Stab

Sound: Whack

Phoenix is no fun.

Music: Maya Fey ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme

Might as well see what Maya has to say about the cardkey herself.

Oh, hey!
Sound: Light Bulb

Let's go check it out!

Yeah!

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

We can't actually move there directly yet, we have to examine the gate again.

The entrance to Studio One.

This is the studio where they found Jack Hammer's body.

I wonder if this cardkey we borrowed from the dressing room will work...

It opened!

Sound: Light Bulb

(She's way too happy for someone visiting a crime scene.)

It's been a longer twistier road than I expected, but next time we might actually finally get to see the crime scene!
